Well, such helpful advice.....thank you all!
lovethemtns, you asked what I remember. I remeber it all! I listened to my walkman up to the boulderfield (gasp.....an actual walkman on a mountain). Well, I was 12 and wanted to climb it, and at the age of 12, it helped me, and kept me motivated.....plus not many 12 year olds appreciate nature like adults. Anyway, I STILL think of that climb when I hear Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks! I definately remember the misery of being exhausted. But what I remember most is the feeling of accomplishment.....the feeling that I had done something so few get to or are able to do. I wrote every paper/essay/report on Long's Peak for literally 3 years after that!
It didn't have too much of a negative impact as this will be my 6th attempt, and if we make it, my 5th summit. I've taken my best friends and lovers over the years just because I have to share something that's that big of a part of my history. Consequently, 4 of those non-family Colorado newbies made it to the top with me at one time or another:).
I should confess that we are total flatlanders......from Indiana. We get out West every 4-6 years and that's it. Every time I've been, we've spent only 4-6 days adjusting to the altitude. I guess we're lucky we've never had more trouble making this climb.
Thank you all again for your thoughts. I have no idea what we'll decide.......I'm not settled on one side of the fence yet. I will promise to update you though!
