i am pretty sure i have read about people making calls atop long's.

Don't feel bad about asking. I'm planning to take mine when I go hiking, strictly in case of emergency, and set it on silent so I won't be interrupted. I'd rather have it and not need it than vice versa.

My cell phone works most places in the park...except if I am deep in the valleys. BUt up above treeline, they have always worked...

Your timidity makes me chuckle. A lot of people get all huffy about others using cell phones and such on hikes.

But you know what? You just busted your ass for seven miles to get to the top of that mountain. If a celebratory phone call makes it more special for you, you've earned it!

I guess one oculd argue that it's disturbing the peacefulness. But how much more disturbing is it, really, than someone talking to someone else that's standing right there? I guess I'm one of those people that "don't get it."

I called my wife from the "summit" of Flattop because I wanted her to share in my accomplishment and I didn't want her to worry about me.

Alright, alright, I KNOW there's no summit on Flattop. Where is that summit anyway? Is it 12 yards over here? Or maybe 20 feet over there? Where did they put that summit anyway?

Yes you can call on a cell phone on top of Longs Peak. I called my husband 2 years ago from the top because I was so excited that I made it - I wanted him to share it with me.

yeah, I carry a cell phone. I started too just in case of emergencies. One time on Hallett, I wanted to see if it even worked and it worked just fine. So I called my mom and she got the biggest kick out of it...so I try to call her when I get to a summit...unless it's too windy to hear, or too cold to take the gloves off and fiddle with the phone. Yeah..I hear people complain all the time about people using cell phones in the mountains. But, yeah, I love solitud eand being one with the mountains and all that jazz, but I love people (family & friends) even mor ethan that, so an occasional call to one of them while I am out in mountains is more than easily justified. Besides, I really don't care what people think about all of that...I hope they have better things to worry about.

I actually don't mind people making calls from mountain tops, but I must admit that I hate to hear cell phones ringing when I am in the wilderness. It just shatters that sense of solitude and tranquility. Perhaps I can put a plug in for putting your phones on vibrate mode or keep them off until you need to call. I think we could all use a bit of quiet without our cell phones intruding. Just my .
