I read an editorial in The Coloradoan regarding an act that U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo is cosponsoring. This act would add a checkoff box to you taxes (form 1040 etc) , smililar to the checkoff for contributing to the Presidential Campaigns. Would you be willing to contribute if this checkoff box were placed on your tax form?

P.S. Here's a link to the editorial--->click here!!

I have mixed feelings about this kind of initiative. I'm always sceptical that, down the road, it will be used as an excuse for more budget cuts, so that the net effect will be no gain or even a loss if contributions don't match expectations. Having said that, I certainly would check that box if it were an option.

Yep, DCM, you are insightful, as always...one must look a step ahead of the "clearly this is a good thing" to the unintended consequences that follow. Of course, I could be very cynical about politicians (really?) and say that the whole reason for doing such a check-off is to create a reason to drop funding from the budget all together at some point...you know, that whole shrinking government thing. But I'm not in a cynical mood this morning so I won't say that, and think that yes, I would be more than willing to contribute via tax returns to the national parks. AR already has several lines of choices at the end of its state form for directing portions of your refund to specific areas.

If you want to help the National Parks. You can do so on your own.
I donate to the National Parks Conservation Association. Your donation goes for the defense of our National Parks from polution, overuse, inadequate funding etc.
Plus you get a cool calander for your donation.
Check it outhere

I also donate some to the Rocky Mountain National Park Associates. Its part of Rocky Mountain Nature Association (I think) It's strictly for RMNP. You get a nice newslettr quarterly for this one.
I think there site is here

Seems like a bad platform for raising money to me. People are already angry that so much of their money is flying out the window when they're doing their taxes that they're not likely to say "here, have some more". Besides, people who are likely to check that box are probably already donating in their own way.

Never sure what happens to the money with this method. Prefer to donate to
RMNP Associates or other Conservation organizations.

I voted no for the same reason Glenn and others said. I already give to the National Parks Conservation Assocation, it's one of my pet charities.

I hate to say I'm cynical about the government and taxes, I prefer realistic. whistling.gif
