I like that tram. It's a nice relaxing trip for tired kids. They also like the fact that they can feed the chipmunks up there.

I like that tram because you can get some really cool pictures that looked like you've hiked and hiked to a mountain summit and still even have your hair combed smile1.gif

I've never ridden the tram although I've been tempted many times. I try to spend all my time in RMNP and stay out of the commercialism of EP as much as possible, and I was afraid the tram would be very "touristy."

I know some people who have gone to EP and did all the tourist things - shopped, ate, rode the tram, and never even went into RMNP! ohmy.gif That is so unfathomable to me that I guess I kind of subconsciously "boycotted" the tram, thinking that was the kind of people who would be riding it.

Is it worth a ride?

Rhonda,

I am like you. Mom (who is the Greeneyes character in this gang) and I were talking last night. We've never ridden the tram, played minigolf, etc. And I've been visiting EP for 25 years. I was always content to chase wildflowers in the park, and my brother (when younger) just wanted to climb every rock in the park. Maybe someday I'll have to ride the tram.

I think it's worth it. Pretty interesting views from up there, and the ride is fun too.

Misssilly, my daughter Jen caribou.gif , is right in that she and her brother were content to "play" in the park. We spent many hours, field guides in hand, examining rocks, (remember the little magnifying glasses, Jen?) flowers, trees, and whatever else we could find. We had picnics in many spots on the east & west sides, and never missed stopping at an overlook or the boardwalk at the beaver pond. The first time we visited the park, the Holzworth Homestead still had animals, and the interpreters actually baked bread in the kitchen! Way cool! Having said that, we also had our visits in EP. No trip was complete without a stop ad Dick's Rock Shop, the Ore Cart, or the waffle cone ice cream shop. (We Never miss our ice cream!) That "fix" of "something that wasn't St. Louis" was enough for us all-the rest of the time we happily were nature lovers & tree huggers. I'm personally in favor of a balanced vacation-a little of all the area has to offer. Whatever the area is, it's bound to be different from home, and usually worth a look around. Besides-those of us who no longer camp-or never camp-need a place to stay, and eat, and a bit of support for the local economy might insure that there will be a place for us again next year!
That's my twocents.gif . Thanks for reading! peace.gif

HY folks! I think staying out of the heavy tourist areas is great. Up in the park and out and about all over the park is even better, but I think most of you would enjoy the tram atleast once. It's fun so give it a try! Peak season will get you in alot of people just as it does all over, but hey, once could be OK! Iv'e enjoyed it more than once and I survived!. laugh.gif Have fun everyone! smile1.gif wink2.gif peace.gif ps. Won't kill ya, ---- unless the cables break! smile1.gif

Even though these days I usually breeze through EP to get right to the park, I have very fond memories of doing all the touristy things in EP when I was a kid, especially the Tram. One of my favorite pics of myself from when I was about 5 or 6 was taken up there, of me feeding a chipmunk that was standing on my shoulder. I was missing a couple front teeth, and looked alot like a chipmunk myself!! pokefun.gif

I'll attach a photo my folks took on their honeymoon in Estes in 1958, from the top of the tram. Wow, only a few years after it opened!!

I myself have never ridden the Tram. The most "touristy" I get is to go down to the EP Brewery after a day of hiking and have a Buffalo Burger and a brew, then back to the campsite in Glacier Basin before heading into the backcountry the next day.
I may have to visit the tram this year though.
Brent, that picture is incredible! there was nothing there!! yup.gif

Thanks for that picture Brent. Looks a little sparse down there in that beautifil valley. Really kind of nice (sparse) if you ask. I might have been the little 8 year old boy riding the tram with your folks. And my own folks also, ofcorse. smile1.gif Thanks for sharing with us! smile1.gif wink2.gif peace.gif

Thanks guys. I'll try to post a bunch more in the Old Pictures gallery soon. I'm actually going home to Iowa next weekend for nine days to hang with my dad while my mom goes out of town, so I'll have a lot of time to go through all of our old vacation photos from when I was a kid. I plan on doing a lot of scanning. I'll hopefully post a bunch when I get back.

Here is one more shot from the top of the tram, looking down into Estes, in August 1958.
