On our day off during our time in RMNP -- our "vacation from our vacation" as we called it -- Jinks Jr. bought a toy accordion on Elkhorn Avenue. Why? Who knows? Jinks Jr. is musical. He plays, with varying degrees of ability, drums, guitar, piano, trumpet, harmonica, and now the accordion. He'd had his toy accordion for all of about a day when we were up at 1:00 A.M. to climb Longs Peak via the Loft with Igloo Ed. When we were on the homestretch near the summit, Jinks Jr. starting laughing, I said, "What?" he said, "You'll see." Shortly after arriving on top, Jinks Jr. pulled his accordion out of his pack. I said, "I can't believe you brought that thing up here. What are you going to play?" He said, "Something celebratory." He then sat down by Igloo Ed and played Beethoven's Ode To Joy while Ed impassively ate pizza. Incongruence is the essence of humor.

P.S.

Yesterday Jinks Jr. bought a real accordion on eBay.

That is too cool.. What a funny grin Jinks Jr had on his face before he started playing away... I bet the folks on top were thinking ... "what the heck?" or something along those lines...

The deadpan look on Ed's face is priceless. I was picturing a burly mountaineer appearing from off camera, snatching it out of his hands and tossing it into Chasm Lake.

Awesome!!
Jr.'s impish grin and Ed's gentle swaying to the soothing sounds were just freakin' priceless. I can't believe the audience didn't give a standing ovation. Some folks just don't appreciate art!
The only things missing were the table with checkered cloth, candle in a chianti bottle and a waiter name Mario!

Ed just nonchalantly eating his pizza like he's heard someone play an accordian on Longs a hundred times before - I love it! That was hilarious!
