A family in my church was in their minivan which got hit by lightning. All four tires went flat. But they weren't hurt at all (once the ringing in their ears stopped!)

And I had just paid off that car on the Friday before this occurred.

Aren't you glad you didn't do like a lot of people and cancel your comprehensive coverage the minute your car was paid off? laugh.gif

Not hiking related, but as a football official, we need to be able to recite the Lightning Disturbances page verbatim before we can be assigned a game:

Monitor local weather conditions and forecasts prior to departing for field.
Upon arrival at the field prior to the game, develop an evacuation plan, including the identification of appropriate nearby shelters.

The rules of "30"
1) A 30 second or less 'flash-to-bang' count calls for the removal of the athletes from the field to an appropriate shelter
2) Once play has been suspended, wait at least 30 minutes after the last flash of lightning is witnessed OR thunder is heard before resuming play.

A girlfriend and I were walking to the car after an outside concert, and it was storming, and Rhonda looked at me and told me my hair was standing on end, and I looked at her, and her's was too.

I was on top of one of the CO foothills with friends and one friend says the survey metal pole and wires that we on top of the mtn. was humming...
I went to investigate and we immediately got off the top down to our camp that was some 50 elevation lower. The lightning struck about 10 minutes later and we were fine.
We had a thread on rec.backcountry about lightning, Googles links are huge so I hope this works http://groups.google.com/group/rec.backcou...a52f1f7f49f1ae1
