Smudge's post regarding his cold hands prompted me to make this post. Smudge, you are a lucky guy to still have your fingers!!!! I confess I never would have thought to bring extra gloves, but that is a great tip!!!

We once had a patient at the hospital that had one too many to drink and passed out in the snow. Well, he ended up loosing all his fingers to frostbite. Imagine having no fingers.

As the forum nurse - I am providing a link regarding frostbite from WebMD. The important things to remember about frostbite are to warm the skin gradually. Not put them put them into hot water or put them right up to a fire. If you are still outside, put your hands under your armpits. Do not rub the affected tissue either. God provided us with the sensation of pain to let us know that something is wrong.

When we play outdoors we often put a thin glove underneath mittens to provide a second layer for our hands.

When visiting this link be sure to click on "The Basics," "Symptoms," and "Prevention."

Be safe!!! Here's the link: cold.gifFrostbite link

Another good idea is to bring an extra pair of socks because some of the winter trails follow stream beds. So if you break through you can get back into dry socks.

Great idea Tom! I keep forgetting to bring an extra pair with me. I fell in to part of a lake the other day up to my knee. (No, not the stream. pokefun.gif That was another day. rolleyes.gif ). Here's a thought to improve on your suggestion. Dry socks don't help for too long with wet boots. I'd suggest that you bring some plastic bags to put over your dry socks if you do fall in.
